4 K-Dramas You Need to Watch Now

In no particular order, these are the top 4 K-Dramas I would recommend if anyone asked me. These K-Dramas are the ones that make you forget you had responsibilities to attend to (I'm guilty of this). Within this list, you get a range of genres, from political scheming and intense action (K2) to a fantasy world where a immortal goblin falls inlove with a human bride (Goblin). Be aware that these dramas totally eat up your life and time... but each story is so charming and alluring in its own way.

K2
더 케이투

The K2 is a high intensity, action drama that centers around a ex-convict turned body guard, known as K2 or Je-ha, who is hired as a private body guard to protect the secret daughter of a presidential candidate. The secret daughter is the highest stake in the game, as the presidential candidate actually cares deeply for his daughter, however is blackmailed by his second wife who controls him by threatening to hurt his blood daughter. The acting of both Ji Chang Wook who plays Je-ha and Yoona who plays the secret daughter, is phenomenal. Each scene was played out with so much emotion and sincerity that it keeps you on your toes the whole time. The drama shows insight into the dirty politics played by the rich and the brutality of survival. The backstory of the bodyguard makes me feel so sorry for him and yet understand why he has so much spite towards the rich who do dirty business. Be prepared for all the backstories to each of the individual characters and you may find your self feeling sorry for even the worst and most 'hated' character.

Another reason to watch K2 is because of Ji Chang Wook's 8 pack and how amazing he looks fighting in a suit and tie despite having a bloody face. In the end, Je-ha becomes the most loyal and dedicated body guard for Yoona and will literally do anything for her. You'll have so many feels after watching this drama T^T

Descendants of the Sun
태양의 후예

Descendants of the Sun is known as one of the K-dramas of 2016 that SWEPT ASIA. I swear, even my aunties in Taiwan were keeping up with the storyline and new episodes weekly when it was airing. If you never heard of any K-drama, THIS is the one that was the hype of 2016 and some people even say it can be considered as the third Korean wave of history. Hahahah, I love this drama too, it has a meaningful plot that's easy to follow and some scenes could make you cry because of sadness or cry of laughter. For sure though, Song Joonki's popularity after this drama exploded (he's the main guy in the drama,) I think everyone fell for his dorky yet brave and manly personality of his character.

To put it shortly, but I really don't like summarising it this way, but Descendants of the Sun is a love story between not only any solider but the captain of the troops and a volunteer doctor. There's also a second main couple in the story that you will probably be cheering on as well.

Also! Song Joongki and Song Hyekyo actually got married a year after this drama aired and it turns out they were dating in real life during this drama. No wonder their chemistry onset was so good! Congratulations to them :)

W - Two Worlds
더블유

W, oh where do I start. This is another drama that took me by surprise and I'm really amazed at how the script writer thought of the plot because there are so many twists and turns. Every episode leaves you with a cliff hanger and the plot is really unique and interesting. Have you ever imagined if what you drew became real in life? That's what happens in W, Yeon Joo's (the main heroine) father is the comic artist and writer for a popular comic book in Korea. However, when he tries to kill off the Kang Chul (main hero), Yeon Joo accidentally gets sucked into the story and ends up changing the storyline from within the story if that makes sense. From then on, she becomes crucial to the storyline and falls in love with the main character of the comic book Kang Chul who defies his being and emerges in real life. It's difficult to explain how that works, but this truly is a really refreshing and thriller drama. Give it a shot, thats why I included it in this list.

Guardian: The Lonely and Great God (Goblin)
쓸쓸하고 찬란하神 – 도깨비

Did you know the writer of Goblin is also the same writer of Descendants of the Sun? This drama was also another huge hit. It really amazes me how script writers come up with these plots and ideas. Goblin isn't your average K-Drama with the cheesy and predictable plots but this one has quite some overlapping history and backstories so you have to pay attention to keep up. The Goblin is a immortal creature cursed to a immortal life until he finds himself a human bride. Originally his only path in life was to find a bride so he could stop watching all his loved ones pass away and just die himself; however, after he meets his human bride he realizes he wants to live with her but fate doesn't allow them to live happily together in this life.

What I liked about the drama was the relationships between each of the characters and how it linked to their histories. They are kind of reincarnated versions of themselves in the past. The Grim reaper and the Goblin are played by Lee Dongwook and Gong Yoo and they have such a bromance going on and bring a comedic element to the drama.

Let me know in the comments if you've watched any one of these dramas and what you think! Which one is your favorite?

Sincerely,
Siree
